Not in Spain

A common question from friends and family is "can you get _____ in Spain?"  So I added this page that will be a growing list of things that I have tried to get in Spain and have not been able to find.

  • Peanut Butter - well, they do something like peanut butter, but it is not really all that close to JIF Creamy.  We opt to buy Nocilla (kind of like Nutella, but not a good substitute for peanut butter).
  • Cake or Brownie Mixes - if you search hard enough you will occasionally find them, but then they cost about $5 - $6 for a box - so not financially feasible anyhow.  Learning to make them from scratch.
  • Instant Pudding - they have a vanilla, premade pudding that you pour out of a carton - not so good for making banana pudding with.
  • Country Sausage - you can buy all kinds of premade sausage, but nothing like what we in the south eat for breakfast.  You can also buy ground pork, but not the sausage seasoning to add to it.
  • Crisco - they have lard, but not vegetable shortening.
  • Brown sugar - again, they have brown sugar, but it isn't like American brown sugar.  It is granular sugar (like white sugar), but a little coarser and flavored with something, perhaps molasses.  No moisture in it so doesn't cook quite the same.
  • Biscuits - they have no idea what a biscuit is - canned or homemade.
  • Syrup - was told that some places carry pure maple syrup, but I am an Aunt Jemima kind of girl.
  • Boxed Macaroni and Cheese -   Never thought Kraft Mac and Cheese would be something my family was asking for.
  • Hot Stuff  - especially things such as dried peppers.
  • Grits - I know, that is probably a crazy thing to miss.
  • Okra - that is usually met with "what is okra?"

I was recently asked what is the best way to send things to us:
US Mail is the best way, but small boxes.  Anything large is guaranteed to be gone through.  Also, never put a value of more than $30 on the customs form and it is best not to insure it unless it is irreplaceable.  If it is valued at more than $30 or has insurance we have to pay customs on it - which is anywhere from 1.5 - 3 times the value listed on it.

If you do not have our mailing address and would like it, send me an email.
